Pakistan's food production has increased dramatically in recent decades. Food security is a major concern due to rapid population growth, rapid urbanization, weak purchasing power, high price volatility, unreliable food supplies, and inefficient food delivery systems. According to the 2016 Food Security Assessment Survey (FSA), 18% of the population of Pakistan is undernourished. The National Institute for Population Studies found that severe stunting (at a rate of 45%), wasting (15%), and being underweight (30%) were all common (NIPS). Rural areas (46%) and regions such as FATA (58%) and GB (51%), as well as Balochistan (52%), have high rates of malnutrition. Similarly, about 50% of people consume less iron and vitamin A than recommended.
